Building Materials

The Foundation’s concern is to sustain the technical and design practices of traditional building with local materials. This includes the construction of walls, vaults and domes with sundried mud brick, known as madar, or stone and shale(qirf). Wood from local and imported trees are also used for wall ties, carved windows, doors, columns and for ceilings, beams and rafters. Nurah, the local lime paste and wash is always used as a render and plaster to dress buildings, and as a damp-proof course.
